This session will explore how foundational skills in radio, storytelling and live performance can translate into entertainment, writing, comedy and national platforms. Drawing from a journey that began in Mississippi radio and evolved into award-winning comedy, music and television writing, this mentor will discuss how to pivot strategically, build a personal brand and take bold risks while staying rooted in authenticity. Together, they bring extensive international experience to a program highlighting the expressive range and versatility of the classical saxophone and piano repertoire.

Michał Maślak is a saxophonist and educator associated with the Military Orchestra in Bydgoszcz and the Academy of Art in Szczecin. He has performed throughout Poland and internationally as a soloist and ensemble musician, with appearances at the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin, Częstochowa Philharmonic, Chopin Centre in Szafarnia, and Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. His international performances have taken him to Germany, the United Kingdom, Kazakhstan, Romania, Norway, and Italy. His recordings include Saxophone Music of the XIXth Century and his 2022 solo album, Koncepcja, featuring works dedicated to him.

Jennifer Schroeder is a pianist, chamber musician, and author who serves as a university lecturer and collaborative pianist at the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz. A laureate of numerous international competitions, she has received top prizes in Italy, Austria, Germany, and Hungary. She was also one of eleven pianists awarded a scholarship to attend the prestigious International Piano Academy Feuerwerk Einbeck and the only pianist from Poland selected for the program.

Join us in Marsh Auditorium for an engaging recital celebrating the rich classical tradition of the saxophone and the dynamic musical partnership between saxophone and piano.

Each Community Tour celebrates a host community.

On Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026. RHCJC will host its inaugural Community Tour at The Lumberton Church from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free lunch will be provided.

What to Expect

Throughout the day, attendees can participate in:

Community Conversations - Hear from community leaders about issues affecting Lumberton and the surrounding region. Journalism and Storytelling - Learn how local journalism strengthens communities and how residents can share story ideas. Community Skill Labs - Hands-on sessions led by RHCJC students and staff on social media, Canva and working with the media. Media Literacy - Interactive workshops through the Center’s “Ask Me What Is True?” initiative. Community Connections Lunch - A free lunch bringing together residents, organizations, businesses, educators, journalists and local leaders. Community Showcase - Visit vendor booths of local businesses, nonprofits, churches, civic organizations, schools, healthcare providers and community agencies. The inaugural Community Tour is being held in partnership with: Lumberton Main Street Association, The Lumberton Post and Community collaborator Arlicia Jordan.

Over the past 27 years, Lemieux has produced scores of Grateful Dead CD and DVD releases, many of which have been certified Gold, Platinum, and Multi-Platinum by the RIAA, as well as several Grammy nominated boxed sets. He has produced 52 of the Grateful Dead’s World Record 66 Billboard Top 40 albums. Lemieux was the Supervising Music Producer on the Martin Scorsese-produced career-spanning documentary on the Grateful Dead, Long Strange Trip: The Untold Story of the Grateful Dead. Since 2007, he has hosted a daily show on the Sirius XM Grateful Dead Channel, “Today in Grateful Dead History.”

Following David Lemieux's presentation, The Stolen Faces will perform. Since 2014, The Stolen Faces have deftly captured the spirit of the Dead, covering the band’s expansive catalog and delivering it with the sort of energy and spontaneity that might have you thinking you’re standing in the Winterland Ballroom in 1973!

Hailed by The New York Times as “a virtuoso,” McAllister is one of today’s foremost classical saxophonists and a leading champion of contemporary music. He has premiered more than 300 works and appeared with major orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Nashville Symphony, and Berlin Philharmonic. His extensive discography includes more than 60 albums and multiple GRAMMY Award-winning recordings. McAllister is soprano saxophonist of the renowned PRISM Quartet and Professor of Saxophone at the University of Michigan.

Joining McAllister is acclaimed collaborative pianist Liz Ames, recognized internationally for her work in contemporary wind and chamber music. Ames has participated in more than 50 commissions and world premieres and has collaborated with leading artists including Branford Marsalis, Amy Porter, David Zerkel, and members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Ride the Cyclone is a wildly imaginative, darkly funny and unexpectedly moving musical about six teenagers who find themselves together in the afterlife after a freak accident. When a mysterious mechanical fortune teller offers one of them the chance to return to life, each must make the case for why they deserve a second chance.

What follows is part carnival, part rock concert, part fever dream and part existential group therapy, with a gloriously eclectic score to match. Beneath the outrageous costumes, strange characters and wicked humor is something surprisingly tender: a story about who gets remembered, what makes a life meaningful and how little we really know about the people around us.

It is theatrical in the best possible sense: bold, weird, funny, unpredictable and completely unlike the usual musical.

Since 1985, the ensemble has performed at numerous prestigious events, including Mississippi Bandmasters Association conventions, All-South Honor Band clinics, three regional College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) conferences, three national CBDNA conferences and two annual conventions of the American Bandmasters Association. The Wind Ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Catherine Rand.
