Faculty Artist Series presents Dr. Marcos Machado, string bass & Dr. Ellen Elder, piano
An evening of pieces for String Bass and Piano composed by Manuel de Falla, Gnatalli, Popper, Proto, and Garner.
Brazilian-American Marcos Machado maintains an active performing and teaching schedule, touring the USA, Europe, and South America. As Professor of double bass at The University of Southern Mississippi, he has organized ten editions of the “Southern Miss Bass Symposium.” In Brazil, he is the founder and pedagogic director of the Pampa International Music Festival (FIMP Bagé), now in its tenth edition.
Machado is the only South American to have earned both the “Teaching” and “Performance” diplomas from the L’Institut International de Contrebasse de Paris where he has studied with renowned double bassist François Rabbath. Marcos started double bass studies with Uruguayan professor Milton Romay Masciadri (1931-2009), former principal bass of OSPA (Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra). Marcos holds a Master's degree from the University of Georgia (Dr. Milton Walter Masciadri). and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Professor Michael Cameron).
Dr. Ellen Price Elder is Associate Professor of Piano at USM. She teaches applied piano to graduate and undergraduate piano majors, serves as coordinator and teacher in the class piano program, and teaches piano pedagogy. She is an active collaborator with USM faculty and guest artists, and has performed throughout the United States and South America as soloist, collaborator, and masterclass clinician. Dr. Elder founded the Southern Miss Piano Institute, which offers private lessons to pre-college students and adults in the community. Her college and pre-college students receive numerous awards and honors for their performance.
She is winner of many competitions and awards (Steinway and Sons Top Teacher Award 2017 and 2021), and is in demand as an adjudicator and clinician. She is an active member of the local and state music teacher organizations (President of the Mississippi Music Teachers Association 2014-2016, and two terms as President of the Hattiesburg Music Teachers League).
