The Impromptu Piano Trio will perform a program consisting of works by two great German composers, Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms. Trio in E flat Major, Op. 70 belongs to Beethoven’s middle period. It was composed in 1808, soon after his Symphony No. 6 and the celebrated Rasumovsky Quartets. The Piano Trio in C minor, Op. 101 was written by Brahms in the summer of 1886 while the composer was on holiday in Hofstetten, Switzerland. The most succinct of his piano trios, Op. 101 demonstrates Brahms’s mastery in thematic variation and his love of rhythmic complexity.
