University Forum: Sarah Lewis

Sarah Lewis, an associate professor at Harvard University, is the award-winning author of The Rise: Creativity, the Gift of Failure, and the Search for Mastery. Lewis will speak at the University Forum on the intersections of art history, race and the story of America. She will further explore how art serves as a vehicle for social justice.

Lewis is an accomplished Art History scholar whose research focuses on the intersection of African American and Black Atlantic visual representation, racial justice and representational democracy. Her award-winning “Vision & Justice” issue of Aperture magazine received the 2017 Infinity Award for Critical Writing and Research from the International Center of Photography, and her scholarship has been published in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Artforum and Art in America. Forthcoming publications include Caucasian War: How Race Changed Sight in America (2022). Before joining the faculty at Harvard, Lewis held curatorial positions at The Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Tate Modern, London, and taught at Yale University School of Art.
