Talithia Williams, an associate professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College, will speak about “Data, Health, and Change” at the University Forum.

Williams creates statistical models that help people and governments confront problems of health and the environment. She is a regular contributor to PBS NOVA, including as a host of the recent documentary “Zero to Infinity” and as a co-host of the 2018 series “NOVA Wonders.” She has worked at NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the National Security Agency, and as a research partner to the World Health Organization, but she is best known for a TED talk, “Own Your Body’s Data,” in which she argues that simple data about our bodies can help us better understand our health. She is also the author of Power in Numbers: The Rebel Women of Mathematics, and in 2015, she won the Mathematical Association of America’s Henry L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching.
